MEMENTO MORI

UNE HISTOIRE BRÈVE

. . . Clicking on this picture will give you an example
    of the centered pop-up windows used on this page.

SPLEAN'S DISTANT PAST:
. . . Young Splean (YS),
    orphan, reluctant entertainer
. . . YS ditches the sideshow,
    tries out new-fangled motorized bicycle
. . . YS ensnared
    in a harvest festival   (bigger photo)

THE STRANGE YEARS:
. . . A budding scientist, Splean developed fluorescent
    photography lighting, before being swept off to Europe
    under mysterious circumstances.
. . . Splean, at once charismatic and enigmatic, was elected mayor
    of Leipzig and hosted the up-and-coming National Socialists
    during a tribute at the Richard Wagner Memorial in 1934, with Winifred Wagner   (bigger photo)
. . . The Führer took a shine to Mayor Splean and enlisted him
    for party politicking. Here he is serving as translator at the
    meeting of Mussolini and Deladier at the 1938 Munich Conference.

BACK IN THE USofA:
. . . When things started to get ugly in Europe, Splean disappeared.
    He turned up back in the States and was spotted by a casting agent.
    This is an early gig with Rita Hayworth.
. . . Another photo shoot, this time with lovely actress
    Joan Fontaine.
. . . Acting opportunities were few and far between.
    Splean almost landed a role on the early television series The Addams Family.
    This is a rare shot of the original cast.
. . . Splean also worked as a pizza delivery boy, a janitor,
    an orthodontist, and a psychopathologist before scoring another role
    as King Louis opposite the luminous Catherine Deneuve.
. . . Splean is a recluse for the most part, because his presence
    causes general time/space distortions, which he finds very embarrassing.
    Splean likes cookies. Befriend him with cookies.

FRIENDS OF SPLEAN, LOST:
. . . Psycho Vince, an affable smarty-pants, excellent pianist,
    Chuck Taylor fan, and eternal student;
    mistakenly perceived a cold shoulder from me and disappeared
. . . Backwoods Birch, college roommate, pessimist, music lover;
    lost my collection of Twin Peaks tapes;
    former Northampton socialite, moved to Oregon, disappeared
. . . Fast Eddie was a positively amicable workmate
    whose lifestyle differences (wife, kid(s?)) thwarted
    our companionship; a proverbial sad drifting apart
. . . Dead George
      was my oldest friend, as i was maturing . . .
. . . Dead George
      was my film-making buddy, a partnership enduring . . .
. . . Dead George
      a physically awkward Jacobite Irish crossbreed . . .
. . . Dead George
      a geek of weird, an epicure in need . . .
. . . Dead George
      had 100 friends and a fiancée . . .
. . . Dead George
      got bone cancer and went away.

FRIENDS OF SPLEAN, NOT LOST (at least spacially):
(now includes un-dead and otherwise reanimated!)
. . . Sideshow Bob, oldest continuous comrade of Splean,
started out as a Young Republican idealist . . .
. . . ended up as a medicated, pragmatic humanist
. . . SOMFKARS, or the Sleepy Old Man Formerly Known As Rockabilly Steve,
oldest living ass-ociate (grade school), ironworker, Japanophile, 1950s geek
. . . Marcus [mâr-koos'], né Donnie Darko, aka Fukko, high school friend of SOMFKARS
and Dead George, has OCD, worshipped PJ Harvey for 6 years; likes purple;
pessimist, frequent absolutist; many common Splean interests
. . . Flaux, aka Keyse, fellow PJ Harvey revering Bostonite; pokes Splean at every opportunity
. . . Swill Bill vol. 2, formerly Swill, formerly Potsdam Bill, a curious and jovial close college buddy
of Sideshow Bob that i unavoidably befriended
. . . Haggis, inevitable spouse of Swill whose quirks attract; former Person In Black, photo geek
. . . Xina, or Xtina, sole sibling of Haggis, iconoclast, mildly deviant, New Yorker, blue-eyed Scorpio:
what a stew!
. . . Amy, or Sybil, sole sibling of Swill, quirky education professional, leaf scrutinizer;
closest corporeal representative of Sol in Splean's sphere of cognizance, though 350 miles away
. . . POT, or (Plain Old) Tiffany, long-time virtual friend of Splean;
many mutual proclivities, 3000 sad miles of separation, though
. . . sBazzy, or Shannon, a fiercely loyal friend who's bettered Splean's recent years;
lapsed violinist, precise driver, tireless adventurer
. . . Deadpan Dave, college roommate, sci fi/ fantasy enthusiast, teacher;
Connecticut denizenry impedes interaction
